Magdeburg-Wolmirstedt Airport was built to strengthen the growing importance of Central Germany as an economic, logistics and travel region. The existing airports in Berlin, Leipzig/Halle and Hanover were becoming increasingly busy, while large parts of Saxony-Anhalt, the Altmark and western Brandenburg remained relatively far from a major international airport. With its central location and excellent road and rail connections, the new airport was intended to close this gap. From the beginning, it was designed not only for passenger traffic, but also as an important hub for air cargo, logistics and international connections. Since then, the airport has been constantly growing and evolving.
