Grant, it was a secret United States Army Air Corp reconnaissance and signals intercept base before the Second World War. Post-war it was abandoned in the early 1950s and subsequently forgotten. It was re-discovered by Cmdr McSlash’s father,’Red’ McSlash, visiting the Island in 1972 with friend and fellow raconteur, Frank Sinatra. They kept their discovery secret for over 20 years. The Cmdr learned of his father’s secret upon his death in 1999. He immediately began seeking financing to acquire the rights to the land. Times were tough, the money was hard to come by and he turned his attention to a rundown GA field near San Francisco, in Fairfield, CA. Finally in 2026, with the assistance of Project Airports, he was able to lease the land for 99 years from the Catalina Island Conservancy, realizing his father’s dream. Development began soon after.
