Wallowa Lake Park Airfield KFMR

Tucked inside Wallowa Lake State Park, Wallowa Lake Park Airfield began as a small idea from a longtime pilot named Frisco who believed one of Oregon’s most beautiful places deserved to be experienced from the air. Early in his flying career, Frisco fell in love with the de Havilland Twin Otter. To him, it was nearly perfect: rugged, dependable, and just as comfortable on a rough strip as it was on floats. Years later, while flying over Wallowa Lake and the surrounding mountains, he started imagining an airfield that felt like it belonged there instead of something carved awkwardly into the landscape. The result was a simple mountain airport designed around the park itself. A compact runway serves wheeled aircraft, a small FBO sits near the lake, and grass parking gives bush pilots room to tie down and stay awhile. Lake access allows floatplanes to arrive from the water and transition into the airport grounds. As word spread, the field became a favorite stop for backcountry pilots exploring northeast Oregon. One parking area was eventually set aside for the regulars from Wild River Bush League, giving their Cubs, Scouts, Beavers, Twin Otters, and other backcountry aircraft a home of their own. The airport was never meant to become a busy commercial operation. It was built to be a destination. Pilots can fly in, park beside the mountains, walk into the state park, spend the afternoon along Wallowa Lake, and stay long enough to watch the sun disappear behind the peaks.
