Founded in 1962 by former military pilot Thomas Bailey, Raven's Ridge Airfield was originally a small grass landing strip carved into the summit of a remote Appalachian ridge in West Virginia. Its unusual location quickly attracted adventurous pilots seeking challenging approaches, spectacular mountain views, and an escape from busy airports. By the 1980s, Raven's Ridge had become a popular gathering place for backcountry aviators, hosting regular weekend fly-ins, aircraft camping trips, and community barbecues. After deteriorating runway conditions forced a temporary closure in 2009, local aviation enthusiasts restored the airfield in 2018. Today, Raven's Ridge is best known for its frequent fly-ins, annual "Ridge Runner Fly-In," and breathtaking mountain scenery. Its narrow grass runway, steep surrounding terrain, and unpredictable ridge winds make it a rewarding destination for experienced general aviation and bush pilots.
