The story of CAMPBELL ISLAND AIRBASE

Explore a lone isolated airbase in Campbell Island, one of New Zealand's most remote subantarctic islands. Constructed in the mid 1970s, it was at the discretion of the New Zealand government to establish an airfield within this location due to the island's extreme isolation and rugged landscape. This made it ideal for long term scientific observation and projects with minimal public interference or disruption. While the airbase itself is officially classified as a "meteorological weather station", many conspiracies have surrounded the area that the airbase may have been constructed for other reasons. It is rumoured that high risk and maintenance aircraft operations are performed at the island, with military cargo aircraft such as the C-17 Globemaster and the C-130J Hercules performing flights to this island, despite its rugged terrain and unstable conditions. Some even say that NZCO is one of the most dangerous operational airfields in the South Pacific. Pilots who fly to NZCO are expected to fly aircraft capable of traveling long distance with routes operating from cities in the South Island such as Invercargill, Dunedin, Queenstown, and Christchurch, though the airbase only accepts cargo flights and private chartered passenger flights. The airbase itself features 3 primary residential compounds for workers and employees who perform research operations on the island. The airbase also features a large singular hangar building used to store heavy aircraft and cargo along with a control tower and a primary operations centre. It is rumoured however that much of the island's operations are done from underground facilities located within the surrounding mountains or underneath buildings of the airbase itself. Whether it is seen as just a remote research outpost or something else, Campbell Island Airbase (NZCO) remains one of the most intriguing and disputed places in the South Pacific thanks to its proximity and extensive folklore legends.
