The story of Lade Airport

Built by the German Luftwaffe in 1940 during the occupation of Norway, Lade Airfield served as a fighter and transport base protecting the strategically important port, submarine bunker Dora, and the city of Trondheim. The 1,140-meter concrete runway became home to Bf 109 fighters, Ju 52 transports and other Luftwaffe aircraft throughout the war. Allied aircraft attacked the airfield several times, and traces of the wartime defenses can still be found around Lade today. After 1945 the airport became a civilian airfield before closing permanently in 1965 as Trondheim's aviation moved to Værnes. Fly low over the Trondheim Fjord, explore the historic coastline, and imagine the intense air operations that once filled these skies.
