Established in 1952 as a small Solano County Airfield, it served mainly local crop dusters, a $10 airplane rides pilot, and the Alexander Vraciu Flight School. Vraciu was a hero of WW2, the Navy's fourth-ranking flying ace with 19 kills. In 1959 the California Department of Forestry established one of their first small spotter plane stations at McSlash Field. With it’s proximity to the Napa Valley, Lake Berryessa, and the California Delta it was an ideal location. In 1970 CDF enlarged their footprint on the field with fully manned station. In 2007, CDF became Cal Fire, and are the largest tenant on the field. The Pilot’s Lounge has recently expanded to include a swimming pool for pilots and their crews only. The Cmdr’s Bar and Grill is popular and open to the public. Always crowed on the weekends, it is a favorite with local flight enthusiasts, and those who want to be. It features a rooftop observation deck. The ribs and links, smothered in the Cmdr’s fiery BBQ sauce, are to die for. The Livery Showcase is the latest attraction at the field. The runway, taxiways, aprons and parking are well lighted, and there is an operational fuel service.
