Potomac Airport KPOT

Potomac Airport (KPOT) was conceived as a purpose-built gateway to the nation’s capital, offering private, corporate, and government aviation an alternative to the crowded airspace surrounding Washington, D.C. Built along the Virginia side of the Potomac River near Mason Neck, the airport began as a controversial proposal backed by a coalition of Northern Virginia business leaders, aviation groups, and politically connected investors. Supporters argued that Washington needed a secure, efficient airport dedicated to the growing number of congressional delegations, lobbyists, diplomats, executives, and government contractors traveling to the capital. After years of environmental reviews, congressional hearings, and negotiations with Virginia officials, construction began under the Potomac Regional Aviation Act. The site was designed to preserve much of the surrounding shoreline while creating a modern executive airport with direct transportation links to Capitol Hill, Arlington, and downtown Washington. KPOT quickly earned the nickname “The Congressional Gateway.” During legislative sessions, its ramps fill with business jets carrying lawmakers, lobbying firms, corporate leaders, and visiting officials. Away from politics, Potomac Airport also serves general aviation, charter flights, emergency services, and regional business traffic. Today, KPOT stands as one of the Washington region’s most unusual airports: part transportation hub, part political institution, and unmistakably tied to the power corridors of the Potomac.
