KBDB Bodega Bay / Reginald LeCrispe Municipal Airport Conveniently located just north of Point Reyes VOR (Navaid: PYE, 113.7), Bodega Bay Municipal Airport is named after local legendary chef Reginald LeCrispe, who is generally credited with inventing a breakfast confection known as the "Flapffle" (a contraction of the words flapjack and waffle, referring to a single, large buttermilk pancake with a Belgian waffle stacked on top) in the late 1920’s. Some degree of controversy exists among pastry historians as to the exact date and purpose behind his creation, with two distinct schools of thought: One group claims that such an eccentric creation was consistent with the extravagant Roaring 20’s culture of the time, when local patrons would emerge bleary-eyed in the early morning hours from the local speakeasies, hungover and looking for any available calories to absorb their excess alcohol intake. Others argue that the Flapffle was the natural outcome of cost-cutting practices following the stock market crash later that year as families looked to stretch their precious flour, milk and egg supplies in the initial days of the Great Depression. Both sides do agree on one thing: neither believe that the technology required to merge pancakes and waffles together into a single edible serving existed at this point in history, since such scientific advances were thought to be at least another 10-15 years away from even the most capable short-order cultures. Sadly, the exact date of LeCrispe’s first Flapffle serving remains unknown since the records were unfortunately destroyed in a tragic syrup detonation which claimed the life of LeCrispe, his pet Yorkshire terrier Gwendolyn and a California Grizzly bear in 1934. “He died doing what he loved” local fire Marshall Royland DePue stated in a post-accident interview as he wiped pancake crumbs from his mustache, “The bear was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time".
