The story of Katahdin Mountain Regional

Hidden deep within the vast wilderness of Maine, beneath the shadow of Mount Katahdin, lies Katahdin Mountain Regional Airport (KMTK) — a field built for those willing to fly beyond the ordinary. KMTK wasn't created simply to replace an airport. It represents the beginning of an entirely new chapter for Project Air. Following the retirement of Mt. Washington Regional Airport (KMWR) in New Hampshire, the search began for a new home. But another runway wasn't enough. The next field needed to become a true destination — somewhere pilots would discover on the map and immediately want to experience for themselves. The search eventually led north. Surrounded by forests, mountains, lakes, and some of the most remote terrain in New England, the Katahdin region offered the perfect canvas. Here, an untouched stretch of Maine wilderness would become something completely new. KMTK was born. The airport is being designed around one philosophy: The flight should be just as memorable as the destination. Its runway is designed to welcome everything from bush aircraft and general aviation to turboprops and private jets. Taxiways, ramps, hangars, lighting, fuel facilities, and modern infrastructure will transform the field into a capable regional aviation hub without losing the wilderness that makes Katahdin special. But KMTK is meant to become more than pavement and hangars. The long-term vision is a gateway into Maine's Wild North — supporting charter flights, sightseeing operations, helicopters, cargo, backcountry aviation, and pilots arriving from across the Project Airports network. There are no sprawling cities waiting beyond the runway. Instead, you're greeted by endless forests, mountain horizons, remote wilderness, and the unmistakable presence of Mount Katahdin. KMWR showed what Project Air could become. KMTK is where the next chapter begins. This isn't just another airport on the map. It's a reason to make the flight. Welcome to KMTK
