The story of Couch Escalante Canyon Airport

Couch Escalante Canyon Airport was established as a small private airfield serving local ranchers, bush pilots, and adventurous travelers exploring southern Utah. The airport sits in a remote valley near Escalante, surrounded by dramatic red rock formations, rugged canyons, and the high desert landscape of the Colorado Plateau. Originally little more than a rough dirt strip, the field was gradually improved into a compact paved airport while keeping its backcountry character. Pilots come here for the scenery, challenging approaches, and easy access to the wilderness around Escalante and Capitol Reef. The airport is intentionally small, with limited facilities, a few hangars, and basic fuel services. It is primarily used by GA aircraft, bush planes, and small private aircraft. Pilots should expect strong winds, changing weather, and mountainous terrain when operating in the area. Welcome to Couch Escalante Canyon Airport — where the runway ends and the Utah wilderness begins.
